Organising Events on Council Owned Land

Organising events on land owned by Westmorland and Furness Council in the Borough of Barrow-in-Furness

If you would like to organise an event on council land, you need to apply through our Events Team to get permission. 

This guide has been put together to give basic help and advice to those who are organising events held on former Barrow Borough Council land.

You will need to discuss your event with us at least two months in advance – more if it is a large or complex event.

Types of events and fees

Commercial event

These events provide a commercial benefit to a profit making business or operation including product launches, corporate events and other marketing and promotional activities for profit making organisations.

Cost to hire land per event for commercial organisations

In order to hire land for a single or multiple commercial event(s), there will be a negotiable fee. This fee is for hire of land only. It does not include any additional fees for licensable activity or any additional service that we might provide like street cleaning or rubbish collection. If you are holding your event on prime land, there will be an additional negotiable fee.

For commercial events there will be a £70 fee for administering the application.

Community and not for profit

Any event organised by not for profit, community or voluntary groups that directly benefit the residents and visitors of the district, and do not provide significant advertising or other commercial benefit to a profit-making business or organisation.

Charity

Events organised by registered national or local charities and are predominantly fund raising events for the benefit of the charity.

This fee is for hire of land only. It does not include any additional fees for licensable activity or any additional service that we might provide like street cleaning or rubbish collection. If you are holding your event on prime land, there will be an additional negotiable fee.

For community, charity and not for profit organisations there will be a £35 administration fee.

How to apply

You will need to complete and return the following documents to us (some of which can be found in the events pack below):

  • application form
  • risk assessment
  • copy of your public liability insurance

Some forms provide basic information and guidance to you as an event organiser to help you run the event smoothly and safely. One size does not fit all so there will be some parts of this guidance that will not be relevant to your event.

As events increase in size and complexity, so does the need to provide more detail on what actions are taken to control the event and deal with emergencies.

Organisers of large events will also need to provide an event plan, show that they have followed specific guidance, and prove they have competent people employed to advise them and fulfill certain functions.
